Royal Passage 46
Gregory C. Marshall Design #805
April 23rd 2001
Following its recent successes in serious offshore cruiser yachts,
Victoria B.C. based Yacht Builder, Park Isle Marine is returning
to its roots of building high quality blue water sailing vessels.
This Royal
Passage 46' is the first in a new line of high performance sailing
yachts ranging from 37'-65'. This vessel is the latest in a long
collaboration between builder Park Isle Marine, and Naval Architect
Gregory C. Marshall. The 46' is designed to be a world-class blue
water yacht combining superb accommodations for 4-6, with systems
and joiner-work that are unmatched in the industry. The deck layout
and rig configuration have been carefully planned for convenient
shorthanded sailing. The cockpit is configured such that the helmsman
has superb visibility and access to all winches without climbing
over guests. All seat backs and geometry have been ergonomically
planned for maximum comfort on long passages. Handholds are plentiful
throughout the structures and are conveniently molded in fiberglass
for ease of maintenance.
The cutter
rig configuration was chosen because of its popularity with blue
water cruising yachtsmen. Both the main sail and the foresails are
roller furled and all shrouds and stays have been well located to
make deck passage easy. Making the anchor handling under a flush
deck hatch helps to further clean up the foredeck. This also helps
keep anchor mud off the deck.
The hull form
is moderate displacement with an appropriate balance of performance
and comfort in a seaway. The afterbody is clean and powerful for
downwind performance. The waterline beam is carried well forward
whilst the forefoot is kept shallow for good steering characteristics
down wind. The prismatic coefficient is high which reduces resistance
in the higher speed ranges, and careful attention has been paid
to reduce wetted surface, which helps to improve performance in
light weather. The keel is encapsulated ballast bulbed fin, designed
as a good balance between windward performance, draft and complexity.
As with all
sailing yachts in the Royal Passage Line, the 46' shares the concept
of streamlined outward appearance with many "big yacht"
features and world-class accommodations. The raised saloon provides
360-degree panoramic views, whilst creating additional space for
engineroom and machinery. The side windows in the deckhouse open
for maximum ventilation and are built in stout frames to enhance
security offshore.
Below deck accommodations are generous and are kept light and airy
with numerous hatches and deck prisms. Joiner-work is unbeatable
and owners can select interior finishes of virtually any type of
wood. Careful attention has been paid to sound attenuation and systems
are set up for "silent" operation on batteries and inverters
for extended periods.
Park Isle Marine
maintains itself on the leading edge of technology. While they are
in a constant search for stronger, lighter, and better materials,
each choice is exhaustively researched as to its reliability prior
to its implementation.
The hulls, decks
and cabin structures are vacuum infused with vinylester resin and
unidirectional glass fibres. When core is used in our laminates,
we use ATC Corecel triple cut within our infused laminate. There are
generous overlaps at all edges of material runs, with the stem and keel
having double hull laminates. Being that we use vinylester resin for
vacuum infusion, the risk of osmosis has been eliminated.
If you are
in the market for a fast and lively blue water cruising yacht we
invite you to discuss the Royal Passage Series.
